General George McClellan
Lincoln Appoints McClellan To General of Union Army
Long time military man George McClellan was appointed head of the Union Army this week. Was this the right move? Only time will tell. McClellan does have a good amount of military experience. He is one of the few generals who went to West Point military academy to stay in the North. He was a soldier in the Mexican-American war in October of 1846, but did not get much fighting in as he fell ill soon after his arrival. He was sick with dysentery and malaria, and was in the hospital for almost a month. When he was back he served valiantly as an engineering officer, bravely facing the brunt of enemy fire, so there is no question that this man is experienced, the question is, can he be an effective general?
Before the fighting of this Civil War we are in right now, McClellan became active in politics, proving that he has the brains to be a leader. He was an avid supporter of Stephen A. Douglas in 1860 and it has also been said that if he ran, he could become a very effective governor given the chance. These traits seem to make General George McClellan a great leader. But only time will answer that question.
