Battle of Gettysburg
Yet another Battle has happened in this Civil War. From July 1 to July 3 fighting raged in Pennsylvania. For over two days the battlefield was stained with blood from both Union and Confederate soldiers. There were more than 165,000 soldiers in combat. Estimated casualties stand at 51,112. 3,000+ were killed on the Union side and almost 4,000 for the Confederates. The Union was lead by General Meade and the Confederates by General Lee.
Lee led his men into Northern territory with high moral coming off a huge victory over the Union in Chancellorsville, VA. His intentions were to threaten the North's cities, make them not want to fight anymore, and win a major battle in the North's territory. On July 1, forces clashed for the first time just North and West of the city. Fighting resumed and neither side was gaining an edge. On July 3, the Confederates launched a dramatic and risky attack on the Union. 12,000 Confederates charged the center of the Union's unbreakable wall, as shown above. The Union was able to deflect the attack without much problem. Lee was defeated. Its was an awful defeat for the Confederates, showing that they cannot stand a chance against the Union when we all stand together.
